CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 22 (PIA) — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Office 10, along with partner-agencies and stakeholders in the sugar industry, celebrated the World Day Against Child Labor recently in Butong, Quezon, in the province of Bukidnon.
The celebration, held last June 11, was highlighted by the inauguration and turnover of a four-classroom building donated by Coca-Cola Foundation, Inc. to the Quezon National High School-Apyao Annex.
This was attended by Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin A. Luistro, DOLE Assistant Secretary Beth Reccio, and DOLE Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns Director Chita DG. Cilindro.
The scholarship program for the children of sugar workers and a two-year Associate in Sugarcane Production and Management (ASPM) was also launched during the celebration. The program aims to assist qualified children of sugar workers to complete training on scientific sugarcane production and management as prelude to their employment in the industry.
Also unveiled was the Child Labor Monitoring System (CLMS), which seeks to come up with a better understanding of the child labor situation in Bukidnon. The monitoring system also reinforces the effective implementation of the code of conduct against child labor in the Bukidnon sugar industry through participation of planters, millers, their organizations, and other social partners.
DOLE-10 also released an amount of P100,000 to 22 parents of child laborers in Butong, under the Kabuhayan para sa Magulang ng Batang Manggagawa project. (Archibald S. Batica, DOLE-10/APB, PIA-10)
