Almost 400 employees of SM City Cagayan de Oro and its affiliates participated in the “Grow A Million Trees” tree planting activity in Barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro city recently.
As part of SM’s commitment to DENR’s National Greening Program, it has partnered with the local group, the Canitoan-Pagatpat-Lumbia Landless Association, Inc., to help during the three-year development program of the area in Cagayan de Oro City.
The volunteers led by SM Foundation, Inc. Assistant Vice President for livelihood and outreach Cristie Angeles together with project partners head DENR-CENRO Aldrich Resma and People’s Organization president Emeliano Lanzaderas endured the heat as they trekked the mountainous 20-hectare land in Pagatpat.
“It was exhilarating to climb a mountain together with other volunteers to plant a total of 10,000 narra and cashew saplings for the Cagayan de Oro site alone. And it was an achievement to be part of the team to help preserve Mother Earth,” SM Supermarket assistant store manager Nadia Tanael said.
Meanwhile, SM AVP for livelihood and outreach Cristie Angeles said “Bringing people together as one, inspiring change for a better and greener Philippines, and providing sustainable livelihood to the people living in that particular area – are just some of our goals for this project.”
