COTABATO CITY – Police investigators have already identified the men behind the near fatal ambush of the provincial treasurer of Maguindanao last December 13, officials Friday said.
Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu said police authorities have filed charges against the ambushers of Osmenia Bandila, Maguindanao provincial treasurer, in a highway in Guindulungan town in Maguindanao.
In that incident, Bandila survived the attempt on his life although he sustained minor injuries. His two police escorts and the driver were also slightly wounded.
Mangudadatu refused to reveal the identities of the suspects but initial investigation showed the gunmen belonged to local lawless groups who have no connections with syndicated groups.
The ambushers were only after the more than P5 million cash Bandila was bringing to provincial capitol in the town of Buluan town when the incident happened.
“Lucky enough the ambushers failed to take the money intended for our provincial workers,” he said.
Senior Supt. Rodelio Jocson, Maguindanao police chief, said they have witnesses who provided them with vital information leading to the filing of appropriate charges.
“The vehicle that the suspect used and left when government forces responded after the shooting was very vital evidence,” he told reporters.
Following the incident, Mangudadatu ordered the finance department of the province to seek police escorts in transacting finances in other areas. (PNA)
