MEMBERS of the 17th City Council headed by Vice Mayor Caesar Ian E. Acenas yesterday adopted a resolution congratulating Atty. Virgilio Mendez for his appointment as the director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
Councilor Ramon G. Tabor, who presided over yesterday’s session, is the main proponent of the resolution.
According to Tabor, although Atty. Mendez is from Bohol, he stayed in Cagayan de Oro for decades and served as the NBI regional director for many years.
“We are proud and very happy that the appointed official is the first that has rose from the ranks,” he said, even as he noted that he is the first Mindanaoan to occupy such prestigious position.
Tabor thanked Justice Secretary Leila de Lima for recommending him to the post and President Benigno Simeon Aquino III for appointing him.
“We support their decision and we are proud that they chose a man from the ranks to the highest position,” Tabor said.
He expresses optimism that Atty. Mendez will be able to do what is to be done in the NBI.
For his part, Councilor Adrian L. Barba also expressed gladness over the promotion of Atty. Mendez. He said the new NBI director is a resident of Cagayan de Oro for all intents and purposes.
Councilor Zaldy O. Ocon also hailed Atty. Mendez, saying his promotion is well-deserved.
