ORION, Bataan — A 97-year-old great granddaughter of Francisco Balagtas Baltazar on Wednesday spoke highly of the renowned Filipino poet and orator, saying she enjoyed reading two of his literary masterpieces.
Felicidad Ligaya Baltazar vda. Guzman said she loved reading both “Florante at Laura” and Labing dalawang Sugat ng Puso” that Balagtas wrote.
“The Florante at Laura will never be forgotten by the Filipinos because it is beautiful as if you are reading a Bible,” she said.
She said that she read “Labing dalawang Sugat ng Puso” during the Japanese occupation but lost the copy for unknown reason.
She said that they have not saved any literary works of Balagtas because of two big fires that razed Orion, then known as Udyong.
Guzman is one of the daughters of Jose Baltazar, 13th mayor of Orion, who was one of the grandchildren of Balagtas.
The eldest brother of Jose, Primitivo Baltazar, became the parish priest of Orion and the second to the eldest, Luis Baltazar, was the first mayor of the municipality, Orion Human Resource Management Officer Isagani de Leon said.
Guzman is childless. She resides with a niece in Barangay Sto. Domingo in this town. (PNA)
