THE City Schools Division of Cagayan de Oro of the Department of Education (DepEd) conducted a three-day Journalism Enhancement Seminar from Thursday to Saturday this week at Hotel Koresco in Cagayan de Oro City.
According to assistant schools division superintendent Dr. Reynaldo Manuel Jr., the seminar is needed in compliance to Republic Act (RA) 7079, otherwise known as An Act Providing for the Development and Promotion of Campus Journalism.
There were four speakers during the three-day seminar touching on such topics as copy reading, headline writing, scriptwriting, radio broadcasting and many more. They are Dr. Pepa Pontillas, BusinessWeek Mindanao editorial consultant Joe Felicilda, Cagayan de Oro Press Club executive director Uriel Quilinguing and artist Pennecessencio Estarte.
There were a total of 144 basic education teachers from all over Cagayan de Oro who attended the seminar. Sixty-six were public secondary teachers, 63 were public elementary teachers and 15 were private school teachers.
Manuel who represented city schools division superintendent Elena Borcillo said the city needs teachers “who will teach the children on how to express ideas through writing” and catapult themselves to the cream of the Regional Schools Press Conference which will be held in January next year.
It was learned that the journalism enhancement seminar was aimed for teachers to prepare themselves for the Division Schools Press Conference to be held this September 17 to 18 here in Cagayan de Oro City.
“Teachers should provide directions to all schoolchildren because journalism is an advocacy,” Manuel said.
