Cooperative donates to Iloilo’s ‘Adopt A Fisherman’ project
ILOILO CITY – The Western Visayas Seed Growers Cooperative has donated to Iloilo’s “Adopt A Fisherman” project launched by Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. in order to help small fishermen in the northern towns of the province be able to return to their fishing livelihood.
Inocencio Parian, president of the cooperative and retired Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Officer, came to the office of Governor Defensor Monday to give their initial donation of P15,000 which could already buy one fishing boat for a fisherman whose boat was damaged by typhoon Yolanda last November 8.
Parian said that they continue to raise donations from their members to help raise the 9,000 pump boats being campaigned for by the governor.
Since the governor announced the launching of the project many Ilonggos have already responded. A retired chief of office at the capitol gave part of his retirement benefit for the project. University students in Iloilo City have also contributed to the fishing boats fund.
A philanthropist who requested anonymity donated a huge amount of money that could buy 1,000 pump boats.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, on the other hand, donated 450 units of motor engines for the fishing boats along with plywood and other materials needed in making pump boats.
Defensor said that affected fishermen have asked him if they could have fishing boats first before their homes are repaired so that they could go back to the sea and catch fish for their living. (PNA)
