DA-10 slates World Food Day observance

Cagayan de Oro City – BEARING the theme, “Agricultural Cooperatives: Key to Feeding the World”, this year’s World Food Day celebration gives emphasis on the role of agricultural cooperatives in the pursuit of attaining food security and in contributing to the fight against hunger, poverty and malnutrition.

As such, the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-10) joins the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to mark the annual event by slating activities which are all geared to draw attention to the advancements in food and agricultural development this October 16-17 to be held at the DA-10 Compound.

Highlighting the two-day affair is the ‘pinaka’ and exhibit booth contest, which will be participated by the various DA-assisted stakeholders. These would include the farmer’s cooperatives and associations, people’s organizations and local government units supported by the Mindanao North Coast Integrated Area Development Project (MNCIADP), the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) and the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD), from the five provinces within Northern Mindanao.

Wherein, the exhibitors will accentuate different farm-tested and food processing technologies, agricultural products, processed food products, among others to illustrate the successful implementation of agri-projects in their respective areas, in the most original, creative and resourceful way. Of which, some are up for display while others are for sale at reasonable prices.

Likewise, the agencies will do a similar undertaking through its four Agri-Pinoy banner programs,
namely: Rice, Corn, High Value Crops Development and Livestock. However, their primary purpose is to put up a techno-clinic for experts to discuss on the different farm technologies and other interventions under their corresponding programs.

The said occasion will also honor the region’s 2011 Gawad Saka winners. In which, the latter would acknowledge the outstanding farmers’ agricultural triumphs and for serving as good models in their respective farming communities. These include: Emmanuel P. Patricio – Outstanding Integrated Rice Farmer, Ernesto D. Leonar – Outstanding Small Animal Raiser and Lower Balubal RIC – Outstanding Rural Improvement Club.

An open forum will also be conducted, which will be headed by Cooperative Development Authority Director Orlando R. Ravanera and DA-10 Regional Organic Agriculture Focal Person Remina B. Occeña, who will tackle on the significance of cooperatives in farming communities and organic agriculture, respectively.

Value-adding activities will additionally be featured, including the ‘Gulayan Kumbira” to promote various healthy vegetable-cooking recipes. Aside from this, participants and visitors will be provided with an opportunity to learn the principles behind meat processing and cassava cooking through a demonstration.

Furthermore, there will be a conduct of a ‘Hataw” as well as a fellowship night, which will serve as windows to further strengthen the camaraderie among DA-10 employees and its partners.

The said occasion will formally end with a closing program, in which awarding of competition winners will take place. # (Ruthceli O. Alfeche, DA-10)
