DA stops procurement, distribution of vegetable seeds in Eastern Visayas
TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Agriculture (DA) here has temporarily stopped the procurement and distribution of vegetable seeds in the region following feedback on oversupply of production resulting to lower prices at the market.
Bernadette F. San Juan, regional executive director, said that the marketing unit of DA-regional field unit 8 has been instructed to “make an inventory” and get in touch with their partners down to the municipal level to get the real situation.
San Juan said that if indeed the supply is sufficient, the plan is to go into processing with the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Also, she said they might tap markets in Central Visayas, which is nearer to Eastern Visayas.
DA also sought the help of the Food and Agriculture (FAO) to address the concern, she said.
“By October we will have an assessment again,” San Juan said, admitting that they found it difficult to get the whole picture because other individual planters could not be accounted.
San Juan disclosed that the region has allotted some Php10 million for vegetable seeds procurement. To date, around Php3 million has already been spent.
The DA executive said that they halted the distribution of vegetable seeds middle of July.
Some 1,384 kilos of vegetable seeds are already distributed. A 1.5 kilo of vegetable seeds can cover a hectare plantation. (PNA)
