Movie Review: RED 2
What it is: The oldies are back in an even more explosive sequel to the first RED movie. Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren reprise their roles as retired (but extremely dangerous) secret agents. Mary-Louise Parker also returns as Bruce Willis’ love interest, while Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins join along in the fun as a Russian ex-agent and a bomb-making genius scientist, respectively.
In a nutshell: Badass old dudes travel all over America, Europe and Russia to track a nuclear device, while being chased by shady government agents and the world’s best assassin (Korean star Byung-hun Lee).
Two hours of laughter-packed action and superb acting courtesy of the old-timers who really do know what they’re doing. Bruce Willis is, as usual, the hardcore super agent that you just can’t kill, John Malkovich is his crazy funny self, while Helen Mirren is the super bomb. (I loove that lady!) Her action sequences are both impressive and hilarious and she got me laughing in stitches.
Catherine Zeta-Jones is a bombshell, just like always, stealing scene after scene with her timeless beauty. Anthony Hopkins does what he does best and his incredible acting simply shines through. Even Mary-Louise Parker delivers her role perfectly, being the wacky, “normal” girlfriend who is the oddball in the group as the only non-agent. Byung-hun Lee is also terrific, and you just gotta love how he struts around in his perfectly-fitted designer suits like he’s some kind of Korean James Bond.
In short, the actors are all great, and they delivered perfect acting. Their roles are as suited to them as Byung-hun Lee and his suits.
With all the great actors and awesome scenes, who needs a great plot, right? Fortunately, the plot made sense too, and it wasn’t just running around the world chasing and being chased for no reason at all. The writers actually made things work, tying together a good enough plot, explosive scenes after another, and fantastic action.
The verdict: Crazy, ridiculous fun. If you’re looking for a lot of laughs and visual stimulation without any necessary brain activity, then this is a must-watch. Don’t expect too much in terms of unique, intriguing, and thought-provoking plot, because there isn’t much along those lines. But if you approach this one with a fun, open-minded attitude, then you’re in for an enjoyable rollercoaster ride.
Repeatability: Yep I’d watch this again, of course. Whenever I crave the need for some no-brainer entertainment.
Rating: 7 out of 10 stars.
